The trailer revealed how many scenes were left out in the movie. Anyway, I am not going to talk about the missing scenes that went missing like the watch but at least the watch re-appears again but not the deleted scenes.

  

The trailer for “Los dan Faun” was one of the best in Malaysia this year. Perhaps only the trailer of “Histeria” (this movie opens on 18 December) can match “Los dan Faun”. Certain parts of the movie trailer were shot from the helicopter view which was nice and offered the audiences a glimpse on the beautiful mansion.

  

That was the official trailer that also showcased some of the jokes that can be seen in the movie. How about the teaser trailer?

 

It was the most hillarious and creative teaser I ever watched for a Malaysian movie. It was done ala Taliban executional style. Hans and Adlin acted as the Taliban executioners while Que Haidar was made the hostage. In the teaser, Que Haidar, in the hands of Hans and Adlin, pleaded to all Malaysians to watch the movie in the cinema starting 4th December otherwise Afdlin Shauki will go after him.

 

OPENING CREDITS

This is yet another classic example that differentiate Afdlin from other directors. He used a simple but creative way to introduce the movie. Briefcase was the medium to showcase the names for the main actors and actresses in the movie. When it comes to the crew members, banner and signboards take turns to display their names. The themesong of the movie also helped to build the momentum for audiences to expect a roller-coaster adventure for this movie.

   

BACKGROUND MUSIC

I love all of the background music playing behind when the movie was rolling. It mixed and blended well with certain particular scenes. Some of the songs were from Afdlin’s masterpiece. The best background music was when Adlin and Hans escaped from water tank. Coupled with their expression, that scene was beautifully crafted especially when Adlin appeared from the water with a scissors. 

     

TAGLINE

With the tagline, “Filem Afdlin Shauki Paling Sewel Tahun 2008″, this “Los dan Faun” undoubtedly lived up to its own billing. This is the craziest and funniest Malaysian movie of the year

    

CURRENT NATIONAL ISSUES/TRENDS IN “LOS DAN FAUN”

1. The most expensive movie ever made in Malaysia - Puteri Gunung Ledang (PGL) - has its element appeared in “Los dan Faun”.
a. When Los and Faun rescued the boy scouts in Gunung Ledang, they found the legendary Puteri Gunung Ledang is still alive in 21st century and is still waiting for Hang Tuah but feared of Sultan Mahmud Shah (the last Sultan of Malacca).
b. Adlin, who was one of the main actor in PGL, parodied a line from the movie and also PGL The Musical with the traditional music playing behind.
2. The drug menace in Malaysia where people can hide it everywhere just to avoid the detection from the authorities including stuffing it inside the body.
3. The Silkygirl advertisement was indirectly shown here too when Los tried to distract the attention of Soffar’s secretary on Faun. Instead of mentioning Silkygirl’s product name, Los replaced it with Follow You. In the original Silkygirl advertisement, Mawi and Sharifah Amani were the spokepersons for its brand.
4. The Akademi Fantasia mania was mentioned as Akademi Idola by Lokman.
5. Malaysians’ obssession on prepaid credits, voting in reality TV shows and SMS.
6. The Da Vinci Code’s controversy was featured in this movie too where Los and Faun successfully decoded it.
7. The rampant VCD/DVD piracy and the banned Brokeback Mountain saga.
8. The infamous divorce via SMS controversy.

INTRODUCTION

After the super hillarious “Lu Cilok Gua, Gua Cilok Lu” (Baik Punya Cilok) and “Nokotta! Nokotta!” (Sumolah), here we have a new line for Afdlin’s movie - “If you LOS it, we FAUN it!”.

 

Expectation for this “Los dan Faun” is exceptionally high when it is Afdlin Shauki in the director’s chair. Afterall, this is the man that brought us four critically-acclaimed movies - Buli, Buli Balik, Baik Punya Cilok and Sumolah. I enjoyed and laughed all the way for 108 minutes inside the cinema. Afdlin’s movies are all about current national issues/trends, communal’s perceptions on certain issues and intelligent humour.

  

Everything in ”Los dan Faun” was about Afdlin provided us with a never-seen-before movie - Bone-trickling and highly imaginative movie. For the first time, there was a dead person in Afdlin’s movie (Noor Khiriah as Mariam), the first helicopter scene (Hans was dangling outside the helicopter) and Afdlin himself is not the main actor.

 

No question about the movie title. It was derived from the English words of Lost and Found.

  

Lining up the leading casts are Hans Isaac, Adlin Aman Ramlie, Erra Fazira and Ida Nerina. All of them delivered a wonderful performance in their own characters. AC Mizal was totally underused this time and served little purpose to the movie as his presence was comical. Stephen Rahman Hughes, in his debut movie, was decent and his chemistry with Khir Rahman were nicely blended. Other than that, Noor Khiriah gave herself a good account by portraying Erra Fazira’s maid in the movie. She was cute there and funny especially in her opening scene.

   

Afdlin Shauki created a Blogspot specially dedicated for this “Los dan Faun” to create more awareness among his fans. The name for the Blogspot is “A Production Diary”. I was honoured when I found out that my blog was also mentioned and hotlinked as one of the independent blogger promoting the movie. The hotlink for promoting this movie in my blog was on September 2008.

    

GUEST ACTORS/ACTRESSES

All of them performed superbly in their scenes. They made good use of their limited dialogues and brief appearances to good effect that give the movie extra boost. If I have to choose, I would say the scenes involving Douglas Lim and Rashid Salleh were the best of all. It generated the most laugh among the audiences especially Douglas’ cynical reply on Hans’ RM1 tip. Second best would be Edwin Sumun with his feminine image and his Malay dialogues filled with Chinese slang.

SYNOPSIS (full spoilers ahead!)

The movie opens inside a water tank where our two heroes were seen tied there and the water keeps on flushing down to drown them. After that, the scene turned black and the opening credits started.

  

Carlos Rodrigo Gunting (Los) and Ahmad Faun bin Dollah (Faun) are two best friends leaving Malacca for Kuala Lumpur to find a better job. Their close bond even made Faun’s father, Dollah suspected that the two of them could be homosexual. It is not known what was Los’ previous job in Malacca but Faun was once a cencaluk seller. Faun has a special power of deduction to locate missing items. Not only that, he is also knowledgeable on numerous issues but not the entertainment circle as he does not even know who is J Lo. He is calm, analytical and careful in handling cases. On the other hand, Los is more like a Casanova. He has a knack of looking at beautiful girls, opting for shortcuts to success but visionary. In short, both Los and Faun complemented each other well.

  

Once reached Kuala Lumpur, their first job was at a lingerie shop as salesmen. Los and Faun landed the job after the latter explained in details on what is brassiere which impressed the shop owner. They, however, did not last long on that job due to Faun’s straightforward attitude in commenting on customer’s image. They were sacked by the lingerie shop owner. Faun’s special gift on detecting missing items was unearthed when he helped the shop owner to recover back the missing wallet.

  

Faun’s supernatural power gave the idea to Los on how to make big bucks in Kuala Lumpur. He advertised their services of locating missing items in the newspapers. Their first break into stardom came when they (or rather, Faun) successfully helped the authorities to find missing scouts in Mount Ledang. In the process, Faun also found the famous and legendary Puteri Gunung Ledang much to the audiences’ amusements. Since then, they never failed to locate missing items or individuals. Their abilities were recognized by the Interpol too. Not only that, both of them also successfully broke the Da Vinci’s code and the secret behind the Giza Pyramids in Egypt. To further cement their status as the No.1 service provider for locating missing items, they advertised themselves in the television too. Los and Faun opened a new premise to develop further their popularity and business.

  

Their official attires are in the form of a white-colored one-piece jumpsuit that resembled a foreman or electrician. They were assisted by a secretary.

 

Their sudden shot to stardom did not go unnoticed. Recently, a tycoon by the name of Soffaruddin bin Al Sogood passed away due to a heart attack. He has a vast interest on antique and memorabilia items. Soffaruddin also owns a famous antique sofa company - Soffar Sogood Incorporated. Gone with his death was a RM30 million watch that was bought in an auction in the Sotheby’s, New York. The disappearance of the expensive watch made Soffaruddin’s wife, Jasmin, enlisted the recently-famous Los and Faun for help.

  

The most challenging adventure for Los and Faun has started. It also almost wrecked the years long friendship of Los and Faun over a woman. Nevertheless, this also marks the beginning of the hillarious journey for both individuals with countless of obstacles awaiting them.

  

The two star celebrities went to Soffar’s mansion in Sungai Penchala to meet Jasmin. They were aided by the mansion’s security guard, Lokman. The beautiful wife of Soffar made a grand entrance by piloting a helicopter from Cameron Highlands. Los and Faun learnt that Jefri (Soffar’s adopted brother) is Soffar’s partner in the company. Jefri threatened Jasmin to hand over all of Soffar’s belongings to him as he needs it to clear all his debts. Other than that, Los and Faun also get to know the mysterious and funny maid, Mariam, who is also the wife of the missing gardener - Derus.

  

Los and Faun learnt that the missing watch was last seen when Soffar wore it for his birthday function. By the time when his body was found, the watch was no longer in his possession. Faun lost his power of deduction as he was smitten by Jasmin’s beauty, much to Los’ chagrin. He could not locate the whereabouts of the watch and for the first time, the team failed to detect a missing item in the shortest time possible.

  

Los and Faun kickstarted their investigation with tonnes of assumptions and logical explanations. Both of them concluded that the real thief could be one of the special guests invited to Soffar’s birthday party, which was also the day when Soffar passed away.

  

Their next stop was at the Soffar Sogood Incorporated main office. Kak Rokiah, the first person to discover Soffar’s body, assured to Faun that the watch was already missing from Soffar’s hand. Los and Faun combed the office to gather more clues and  from the rubbish bin, they found a napkin from the Parkroyal Grill Hotel and was baffled to stumble upon grasses as it is impossible to have it in the office.

  

Suddenly, came two guys ambushing them. One of them is a Mat Salleh. The Mat Salleh is Dick Johnson while the other guy is Amran Askor. The four of them fought and Jasmin was shocked to see that. Jasmin told Los and Faun that the two guys were representatives from the insurance company. They were hired to investigate on the missing watch. Jasmin asked the four of them to make peace and work together to retrieve the missing watch.

  

Faun went back with Jasmin to Soffar’s mansion, leaving Los with the two new friends they just met. The three of them, with the Parkroyal Grill napkin, went to a restaurant in the hotel to get information. They were denied entry by one of the worker there, Maitre’D, for not having reservation. But with Los’ idea of impersonating as representatives from the health department, the three of them stormed into the kitchen. Again, they had an obstacle lying in front of them. This time, it was the restaurant manager. He told Los, Dick and Amran that Soffar and his second wife, Serena, always patronized the restaurant for meals. That was a revelation for them as they did not know Soffar has a second wife. By depending on tactics, Dick lied to the Maitre’D and the restaurant manager that Amran is the long-lost brother of Serena, Syariff. The restaurant manager and Maitre’D collectively agreed to tell Los, Dick and Amran on the whereabouts of Serena. She is a GRO in a three-star hotel named De Flower Hotel.

  

On the other side, Jasmin told Faun that she knew Dick ever since the day she and Soffar won the bid for the watch. Dick was the one in charge of insuring the watch and the paperworks. Jasmin knew Soffar has a mistress but chose to keep quiet and did not confront him as she wanted to safeguard her family’s image in Pangkor. Jasmin revealed to Faun that the day before Soffar was found dead, they had an arguments over the watch. Soffar left Jasmin alone and went for the birthday party initiated by his own friends. That made Jasmin angry and disappointed as she piloted the helicopter to Pangkor to meet her family. She was not able to manage Soffar’s burial as Jefri swiftly settled everything.

  

Los, Faun, Dick and Amran went to the De Flower Hotel to meet Serena. She is not only a GRO but also a magician. At first, Serena was not cooperative with them but after Dick gave money to her, she relented. Serena told them that the last time she saw Soffar was for lunch on the day he died. She was adamant that she did not see Soffar after that. Faun, however, had a vital evidence to prove that Serena was with Soffar in Soffar Sogood office at night. Serena dodged the question and chased them away.

  

The next morning, Faun went to Soffar’s mansion to check out on Derus, the missing gardener. But Derus is still nowhere to be seen and even Mariam went missing too. Faun was suspicious on Derus’ whereabouts and he slowly believes that the gardener could be the one took the watch. He met up with Los in the gardener’s house. Mariam was there and told them that her husband will not come back anymore and has divorced her via a letter. He also left a parcel of money to Mariam. Los believed that the case has been solved where the gardener was the thief and ran away with the money obtained from selling Soffar’s watch. Faun poured cold water on Los’ assumption as the gardener left the house without taking his medicine as he is a diabetic. This raised the ire of Los who accused Faun of continuously rejecting his assumptions without reasons. He charged that Faun is too obsessed with Jasmin until jeopardising their business. That makes Faun so pissed off and both of them had arguments and it turned out to be a catfight.

 

Jasmin asked for Faun’s help as Jefri broke into the mansion and took away all the valuable paintings. Faun followed Jasmin back to check out what was left in the mansion. Los, along with Dick, went to Jefri’s house to ask why he did that to his sister-in-law. Jefri was in heavy debts and all people are now looking for him. He stormed into Soffar’s mansion and took all the paintings to sell but to no avail as the paintings were fake. Soffar sold the original paintings long time ago and replaced it with fake ones. Knowing that he has no other options, Jefri decided to commit suicide by jumping to a shallow pool.

  

Faun went back to Malacca to look for his parents for advice on his strained relationship with Los. His father, Dollah misunderstood that Faun and Los are gay partners. He thought both of them are too close for comfort ever since they were small kids. Faun assured to Dollah that neither he nor Los is gay as they are just best friends. While strolling outside his kampung house, Faun knew why the grass was found in Soffar’s office. Without wasting time, he left Malacca for Kuala Lumpur.

 

Los and Dick went to find Mariam. She was panic as she found out that there were two different sets of writings on the money parcel and the divorce letter she got from the gardener. The divorce letter was definitely written by the gardener but not the address on the money parcel. Dick’s expression changed dramatically after seeing Mariam behaving mysteriously and only let Los to know the latest information.

  

Whereas, Faun and Amran headed to Soffar’s mansion from a hospital to meet Jasmin. Amran left Faun at the entrance as Lokman asked Faun to pass over the telephone bills to Jasmin. Faun found out that Jasmin and Dick were always keep in touch via telephone for a long time already eventhough Jasmin claimed that she never had any contact with Dick ever since the watch purchase in the Sotheby’s until recently. Faun went inside the mansion and saw Jasmin was busy clearing all Soffar’s belongings. Faun also learnt that Soffar was an alumni at UCLA when he looked at the college yearbook. He suddenly asked Jasmin to leave the mansion as he has decoded all the hanky-panky behind the missing watch case. Jasmin was shocked when Faun told her that he knew who took the watch and killed Soffar. As Faun tried to persuade Jasmin to leave, Amran suddenly turned up at the doorstep and the screen turned black….

 

Los and Faun were inside the water tank with water kept flushing down at a very high speed threatening to fill up the tank thus drowning our heroes. This is the scene where the movie opened. Both of them were sent here by Dick and Johnson respectively. Faun has recovered all of his missing ability to locate missing items. He knew all the stories behind the case. Mariam was also inside the water tank with them but she was already dead, killed by Dick. The two heroes tried to escape from the water tank and successfully left the place only to find that their car was smashed to pieces.

  

Los and Faun found their way back to Soffar’s mansion. From the outside, they saw Jasmin transferring the insurance money to Dick’s account in the Maldives. They knew that Jasmin and Dick were in the same boat to cheat insurance money. As they attempted to sneak into the house, they bumped into Amran. But our heroes subdued Amran and entered the house to apprehend Dick. They were stopped by Jasmin and this hurt Faun a lot as he wanted to give a chance for Jasmin to repent. Once again, Los and Faun were at the mercy of Dick and Amran. Faun already knew what really happened on the night Soffar died.

  

Actually, the gardener is suffering from a terminal disease and will die anyway in 3 months besides being a diabetic. Soffar coaxed him to switch identity so that he can fake his own death. Soffar had to do that as he was on heavy debts too just like Jefri. On the fateful night, Soffar killed the gardener and swapped places with him by changing all the clothes. Before that, Jasmin, with Dick’s message on Soffar two-timing on her, flew back to Soffar Sogood from Pangkor with the intention of gathering evidence of Soffar cheating on her so that her quest to file for divorce from Soffar would be made easier. She hid inside the closet without knowing the gardener’s body was also there. As Jasmin was waiting for Soffar and the mistress to appear in the office, she dozed off and missed the opportunity to get the needed evidence. Soffar and Serena were having happy moments of magics until Soffar faked his heart attack to make Serena feeling guilty for causing his death. Serena left the office in a haste and Jasmin woke up to see the “dead” Soffar. Jasmin stripped off the watch from Soffar and left the scene. The truth was, Soffar had already changed the original watch with a fake one as he was the real mastermind behind this missing watch. He was in cahoots with Dick where both of them used Jasmin to cheat the insurance money and also to keep the original watch. Once Jasmin left Soffar Sogood, Soffar quickly changed his attires with the gardener so that everyone will think Soffar was dead.

    

Jasmin and Dick tried to run away from the authorities and left the job of finishing off Los and Faun to Amran. Serena went to the mansion and asked for Jasmin’s apologies for causing Soffar’s death but was ridiculed by Dick. Serena kicked Dick on the crotch while Los and Faun overcame Amran who was distracted by Serena’s presence. Jasmin and Dick boarded the helicopter but was chased by Los. Faun, still in the mansion, told Jasmin that Soffar was the master strategist in this mess and Dick was his best friend since their days in college. Jasmin was stunned when she learnt that Soffar is still alive and was with them in the helicopter. Los and Dick were having a scuffle. Los overcame Dick and with two pistols in his hand, he ordered Soffar to land the helicopter immediately.

  

Police were already waited for them on the highway. They arrested Dick, Jasmin, Amran and Soffar on the spot. Serena was relieved to see Soffar still alive. Los and Faun were happy to solve the case and put to a stop for all the nonsenses of this missing watch case. On the other hand, Jefri pretended to be a lunatic to escape punishment but was rejected.

 

With that, the movie ended…

THE MOST DEFINING MOMENTS IN ”LOS DAN FAUN”

The read-in-between-the-lines jokes involving Brokeback Mountain between Faun and his father, Dollah. Faun’s image of wearing the cowboy hat that scared the hell out of Dollah was nothing short of laugh from the audiences.

 

FUNNY SCENES IN THE MOVIE

1. Whenever Los and Faun were asked for a drink, they will only go for Jus Betik (Papaya Juice).
2. Faun ended his explanation on brassierre by saying it can also be used primarily as haze mask and smoke mask.
3. Faun persuading Puteri Gunung Ledang to leave the mountain but met with resistance from the princess who insisted to stay in the mountain waiting for Hang Tuah and to avoid Sultan Mahmud Shah. Faun claimed that there is no more Sultan in Malacca and the one with the highest authority in Johor is the Menteri Besar.
4. Afdlin’s character name of Soffaruddin al Sogood can also be pronounced as Soffaruddin Also Good and also Soffar Sogood as depicted in the movie for the company’s name.
5. The way Los and Faun advertised their talents in the television.
6. Lokman and Mariam told Los and Faun that Jasmin was in Cameron Highlands to buy groceries.
7. The petty thief, in the imagination of Los and Faun, was really frustrated before succumbing to sudden shock for the rides given by them in explaining the case.
8. Los questioned the Soffar’s intention of buying the expensive timepiece and complained Soffar should just wear a T-shirt with an advertisement, “Rompaklah aku! Aku orang kaya!”.
9. All of Amran’s scenes especially his famous lines of, “…..Itu/Ini kita tak tahu!”.
10. Dick relying on a translation book - How to Speak Malay in 3 Weeks - to understand Bahasa Malaysia when Amran is not translating for him.
11. The way Dick pronounce Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia.
12. Hans mocking Dick’s English in Soffar Sogood’s office.
13. Maitre’D ridiculed Los’ request for a table to dine in the restaurant by mentioning they are not selling furnitures.
14. Los tried to bribe Maitre’D to enter the restaurant with RM1 which made Maitre’D again ridiculed him for giving such a low tip.

23. The way Faun tried to comfort Mariam on the gardener’s divorce letter. Faun told Mariam that divorce via SMS is invalid as it was confirmed by the Mufti. On the divorce via letter, he asked Mariam to refer to Jawi.
24. Los angrily said Faun tried to be Inspektor Mazlan of Gerak Khas (that role was played by AC Mizal in the police drama).
25. The read-in-between-the-lines jokes on gay and Brokeback Mountain between Faun and his father.
26. The facial expression of Faun in the Brokeback Mountain’s jokes was so funny.
27. Faun, in a telephone call, confessed to Los that he really missed him but not in a gay way.

FINAL THOUGHTS

108 minutes in the cinema passed so fast when I watched “Los dan Faun”. There is almost no slow-moving and definitely zero boring scenes at all. Throughout the movie, I was glued to my seat with full of suspense and laughed all the way for 108 minutes. The dialogues for the casts were really Malaysianized and urbanized. One has to think deeply to understand the hillarious jokes in the movie. Even the closing credits were funny too especially the final part where a man after finishing his business in the toilet bumped into Los and Faun. He thought they are gays. Some of the NG scenes especially on the parody of Brokeback Mountain were shown too.

     

Once again in Afdlin’s trademark movies, a lot of current issues and popular culture can be seen in “Los dan Faun”.

 

Okay! Overall, the cast who gave the most convincing and best performance in “Los dan Faun” was Adlin Aman Ramlie. The character of Faun made Adlin more stand out as it is more in-depth for the audiences to understand more on him.

  

Well, after all the good points, is there any minus points for this “Los dan Faun”? Of course it has!
1. There is no explanation on how Faun has his supernatural power.
2. The way Faun explained the true story behind the case is too long and too winding in one scene only.
3. A lot of scenes in the trailer were missing in the movie. Is it edited by Afdlin or censored by the Censorship Board? Well, only those two parties knew the reason behind it.

 

Regardless of that, “Los dan Faun” is definitely worth the money you paid to watch in cinema.  All the thrills, jokes, suspense and actions are first class.
